The following morning, I left the house under the pretense of visiting Helen.
Instead, I went to the laboratory and handed over the sample.
I also saw a doctor, who ordered further testing and reviewed my medications.
He asked whether anyone might be giving me substances without my knowledge.
I hesitated.
Then I told him about Daniel.
The doctor’s expression became serious.
“Until we know more, don’t consume anything he prepares for you if you suspect it’s being tampered with. Stay somewhere safe, and contact the police if you believe you’re in immediate danger.”
“Do you think he’s poisoning me?”
“I think your symptoms and what you’ve described warrant urgent investigation. I won’t tell you something is proven before the evidence supports it.”
I appreciated his honesty.
But honesty couldn’t protect me from the thought that my husband might be trying to make me disappear.
Two days later, the laboratory contacted me.
