I felt my knees weaken.
I pushed the door open.
Inside stood Michael, Emily, and an older doctor wearing a white coat. Medical equipment and several folders lay on a table.
All three turned toward me.
Emily covered her mouth.
“Mom!”
I looked at the doctor, then at my husband.
“What is this? What are you doing here?”
Michael stepped toward me.
“Sarah, please sit down.”
“No!”
My voice echoed through the room.
“You have lied to me for three months. I saw you coming out of a hotel together. I read the messages. I saw the photograph. And now I find you both in a medical office, hiding something from me!”
The doctor’s expression changed.
He looked at Michael.
“You haven’t told her?”
Michael’s shoulders sank.
Emily began sobbing.
And suddenly, I realized something that made my anger falter.
Neither of them looked caught.
They looked terrified.
“Tell me,” I whispered. “Whatever it is, tell me now.”
