Michael reached for my hand, but he stopped when he saw me flinch.
“Sarah, I need you to understand that nothing happened between Emily and me. Nothing romantic. Nothing inappropriate. I swear to you.”
I wanted to believe him.
But I had heard too many excuses.
“Then why all the secrecy?”
The doctor gently closed the folder in front of him.
“My name is Dr. Wilson. I specialize in cardiology. I think it is important that you hear the facts before drawing any conclusions.”
Cardiology.
For several seconds, the word meant nothing to me.
Then I remembered the ambulance.
Six months earlier, I had fainted at work. My colleagues said I had turned pale and collapsed beside my desk. I woke up in the hospital with a headache, a dry mouth, and a desperate desire to go home.
The doctors ran several tests. They told me that some results needed follow-up and recommended further cardiac examinations.
