Twenty minutes later, he parked outside a modest medical building.
I frowned.
A medical building?
I watched as he checked his phone and walked inside.
A few minutes later, Emily’s car pulled into the parking lot.
She got out, looked around nervously, and hurried toward the same entrance.
My heart began pounding.
Why would they come here together?
Were they hiding a pregnancy? Had something happened that I didn’t know about? Was there another secret so serious that they had needed a doctor?
I waited several minutes before leaving my car.
The building was nearly empty. A receptionist sat behind a desk, and a quiet corridor led toward several examination rooms.
I heard voices behind a partially closed door.
Emily spoke first.
“Do you think she’ll forgive us?”
Michael answered softly.
“I don’t know. But we can’t keep doing this.”
Then an older man’s voice spoke.
“The latest results are ready. Before we continue, I need to ask you something. Are you absolutely certain Sarah doesn’t know?”
