At 19, Baylee had a full softball scholarship and a chance to leave everything behind. Then she looked at her four younger siblings and made a decision that changed all five of their lives.

 THE PROMISE

At twenty-one, I legally adopted all four of my younger siblings.

I wish I could say there was some dramatic celebration.

There wasn’t.

What I remember most was the feeling.

Relief.

After everything we had been through, I finally knew that they were staying together.

And so was I.

I thought about the girl I had been a few years earlier.

The girl with the softball scholarship.

The girl who had imagined herself leaving the state and starting a completely different life.

Sometimes I wondered what would have happened if I had gone.

Maybe I would have graduated.

Maybe I would have played softball for years.

Maybe I would have built a career somewhere far away.

I will never know.

Because I chose something else.

I chose them.

And I don’t regret it.

That doesn’t mean it was easy.

Raising four younger siblings while building my own life was exhausting.

There were bills.

Responsibilities.

School.

Work.

Appointments.

Arguments.

Laundry.

Meals.

And all the little problems that come with raising children.

But there were also moments that made everything worth it.

Watching them laugh together.

Seeing them grow.

Hearing them call me when they needed advice.

Knowing that when they were frightened, they had somewhere to go.

Years later, my life looks very different from the one I once imagined.

I eventually became a mother to my own daughter, too.

So now I am raising my daughter alongside the four siblings I once fought so hard to keep together.

Sometimes people ask me whether I feel like I missed out on my youth.

Maybe I did.

But I also gained something I never expected.

A family that knows exactly how far I was willing to go for them.

And sometimes, when I look around the house and see all of them together, I think about that nineteen-year-old girl who once stood at a crossroads.

She had two choices.

One path led toward the future she had planned.

The other led toward four children who needed her.

She chose the second path.

But there was one thing I learned that nobody had prepared me for.

Keeping a family together isn’t just about winning a legal battle.

It’s about everything that comes afterward.
