Young woman hospitalized after having…

She looked down at Duke.

“And he didn’t give up on me either.”

In the weeks that followed, Vanessa’s story spread through the neighborhood. Some people had initially suspected the Great Dane. Others had feared that his size made him dangerous.

But those who had watched him outside the ambulance now saw him differently.

He was still enormous. His bark was still deep enough to shake the windows. And he still insisted on following Vanessa from room to room.

But now, whenever someone asked why she trusted such a large dog, Vanessa told them what had happened.

“He didn’t need to understand the danger the way a human would,” she explained. “He only needed to know that something was wrong and that he didn’t want to leave me.”

She never claimed that Duke had diagnosed the problem or deliberately understood carbon monoxide poisoning. She knew that no one could say exactly what had passed through his mind that night.
