13 YEARS AFTER HE WALKED OUT, MY EX-HUSBAND SNAPPED

13 YEARS AFTER HE WALKED OUT, MY EX-HUSBAND SNAPPED “HOW DARE YOU COME HERE!” AT AN ACADEMIC COMPETITION — NOT RECOGNIZING THE TWO BOYS BEHIND ME.

THEN MY TWINS STEPPED UP FOR THEIR GOLD MEDALS, AND HE TURNED PURPLE.

Chapter 1: The Man in the Registration Line

Thirteen years after our divorce, I ran into my ex-husband at an academic competition. He snapped, “How dare you come here!” — then my twins stepped up to collect their gold medals, and he turned purple.

My name is Grace Hartley. Thirteen years ago, my husband walked out for another woman. At the state academic finals, I found him in line with her and their son in a private-school blazer. He saw me and hissed, “How dare you come here today,” never once looking at the two boys standing four feet behind me — his own sons, whom he hadn’t seen since their christening.

“I’m here for my children,” I said, and walked my twins to registration.

At the awards, my son took gold in applied mathematics. My other son took gold in physical sciences — the highest mark in the state. Two golds, same surname. And I watched my ex-husband work it out in stages, until the boy with his exact face turned, found me, and grinned. Then a woman two rows up read the program aloud: “The Hartley twins. Their mother raised them alone.”
