For years, she had measured her progress through achievements. Every license, every promotion, every difficult flight had been proof that she deserved to occupy the space she had fought so hard to claim.
She had become very good at being capable.
She was still learning how to let herself be cared for.
“I think I needed to hear that,” she whispered.
“You can call me whenever you need to hear it again.”
“I will.”
“And next year, if you’re home on your birthday, I’m making you a cake.”
Elena laughed through the tears gathering in her eyes.
“Deal.”
That evening, after the call ended, Elena opened her journal.
She had kept it since her first airline job. Its pages contained handwritten observations from airports, hotel rooms, and the quiet hours between flights.
Some entries described beautiful places.
Others recorded mistakes she never wanted to repeat.
There were pages about her father, notes about difficult instructors, and a few unfinished reflections about relationships she had been unable to save.
