These changes do not necessarily mean that a woman has an infection.
What can help?
- Gently wash the external genital area with lukewarm water.
- If needed, use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser on the outside only.
- Change out of sweaty or wet clothing promptly.
- Choose breathable underwear and avoid staying in damp clothing for long periods.
- Change menstrual products regularly according to their instructions.
The vagina is self-cleaning, so there is no need to wash inside it. A mild natural scent is normal and does not need to be removed.
4. Forgotten Tampons or Other Retained Objects
Although it may feel uncomfortable to discuss, a forgotten tampon or another object left inside the vagina can cause a particularly unpleasant smell.
When a tampon remains in place longer than intended, trapped blood and bacterial growth can contribute to a strong, foul odor. A woman may also notice unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, irritation, or fever.
