Why does the vagina smell bad? 4 reasons every woman should know.

Do not assume that every unpleasant smell is a yeast infection, and avoid taking antibiotics or using vaginal medication without knowing what you are treating. The wrong treatment may delay recovery.

3. Sweat, Menstruation, and Hormonal Changes

Not every change in vaginal odor indicates an infection.

The external genital area, called the vulva, contains sweat glands and is covered by skin that can become warm and moist. Sweat, normal skin bacteria, tight clothing, and trapped moisture can combine to produce a stronger smell, particularly after exercise, during hot weather, or after a long day.

Menstruation can also temporarily change the way the genital area smells. Menstrual blood has its own scent, and contact with air can make that scent more noticeable. A mild, metallic smell during a period is generally normal.

Hormonal changes can affect vaginal moisture, discharge, and acidity as well. Pregnancy, the menstrual cycle, breastfeeding, and menopause may all influence vaginal scent. During menopause, lower estrogen levels can cause vaginal dryness and changes in the vaginal environment.
