WHEN MY HUSBAND’S PREGNANT MISTRESS CALLED ME BARREN, I PRETENDED TO BE PREGNANT—BUT SHE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I HAD DISCOVERED

He looked away.

“Answer me!”

He swallowed.

“No.”

The room fell silent.

I stared at him.

“Then how did my signature get here?”

He didn’t answer.

I held the paper up.

“Did you copy my signature?”

“Ella, listen to me.”

“Did you?”

He lowered his head.

“I was going to explain everything.”

I stepped backward.

“You used my signature on a document about our house without my permission?”

“I didn’t submit it. Nothing was finalized.”

“That doesn’t answer my question!”

Mama Grace looked horrified.

Nonye covered her mouth.

I placed the paper on the table and took several deep breaths.

I knew I needed professional advice before deciding what the document meant legally. I also knew that I could no longer trust Kelly to tell me the truth about our finances.

“Everybody needs to leave,” I said.

Kelly stepped toward me.

“Ella, please.”

“Leave.”

“Let me explain.”

“You have had six years to explain yourself. You had months to tell me about your affair. You had every opportunity to tell me about the debts. You could have told me the truth before you put our house at risk.”
