WHEN MY HUSBAND’S PREGNANT MISTRESS CALLED ME BARREN, I PRETENDED TO BE PREGNANT—BUT SHE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I HAD DISCOVERED

He followed me.

“Ella, please. Why must you make everything difficult?”

I turned toward him.

“Because you have made everything difficult for me. I have spent six years believing that we were a team. Now I discover that you have another woman, a child on the way, and money disappearing from our savings. You expect me to smile because you bought dinner?”

His expression hardened.

“I am trying to fix things!”

“Then tell me the truth!”

He stared at me for several seconds.

Finally, he lowered his voice.

“Suppose I told you that everything I have done was for our future?”

I frowned.

“What future?”

He looked at me with an expression I couldn’t understand.

“Just trust me.”

I shook my head.

“That is exactly what I did for six years.”

He walked away.

Later that night, I lay awake beside him, staring at the ceiling.

I thought about all the times I had prayed for a child, believing that motherhood would finally bring peace to our home.
