“What is all this for?” I asked.
“Can’t a husband do something nice for his wife?”
He pulled out a chair for me.
I sat down cautiously.
We ate in silence for several minutes.
Then he reached across the table and took my hand.
“Ella, I know things have been difficult between us.”
I looked at him.
“Difficult?”
“I know I haven’t been the best husband lately.”
I almost pulled my hand away.
He continued.
“But I want us to start again. Forget the arguments. Forget everything that has happened. Let’s focus on our marriage.”
I studied his face.
“Even Nonye?”
His hand stiffened around mine.
“I told you I would handle that situation.”
“You keep saying that. What does it mean?”
He sighed.
“I don’t want to discuss her tonight.”
I withdrew my hand.
“Then there is nothing for us to discuss.”
I stood up and carried my plate to the kitchen.
