Walking Barefoot on the Earth: The Surprising Benefits of Earthing and What Science Really Says

Barefoot walking may be a pleasant addition to your lifestyle, but it should not be presented as an anti-inflammatory treatment.

4. Can Walking Barefoot Relieve Joint Pain?

Foot discomfort, stiff joints, and muscle tension can make everyday activities more difficult. It is understandable that people experiencing these problems would be interested in simple, low-cost ways to feel better.

Some grounding studies have explored pain and recovery, but the evidence remains preliminary. It is not yet possible to say that direct contact with the ground consistently reduces joint pain or treats conditions such as arthritis.

There is, however, a separate subject worth considering: foot movement and footwear.

Walking barefoot on an appropriate surface allows the toes to move without the restrictions of some shoes. Depending on the individual and the surface, this may change how the foot muscles work and how pressure is distributed across the foot.

These effects do not mean barefoot walking is appropriate for everyone. People with foot injuries, significant foot pain, reduced sensation, balance difficulties, or certain medical conditions may need protective footwear or professional guidance.
