Inflammation is not automatically harmful. In fact, short-term inflammation plays an important role in normal recovery. Problems can arise when inflammatory processes become prolonged or are associated with certain chronic diseases.
Grounding proponents argue that electrons from the Earth’s surface may act as antioxidants by neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are chemically reactive molecules that can contribute to oxidative stress when their production exceeds the body’s ability to manage them.
Antioxidants are important because they help control oxidative reactions. The body produces its own antioxidant defenses and also obtains antioxidant compounds from foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes.
Some small studies have investigated whether grounding is associated with changes in markers related to inflammation, pain, or recovery. Nevertheless, the available evidence is not sufficient to conclude that walking barefoot delivers electrons that reliably neutralize free radicals throughout the body or prevents chronic inflammatory disease.
If you are concerned about inflammation, focus on measures supported by stronger evidence: eating a balanced diet, engaging in appropriate physical activity, getting adequate sleep, and following medical advice for any underlying condition.
