“Don’t touch me again.”
He sat back.
I moved as far away from him as the seat allowed.
“Now explain everything. And don’t leave out a single detail.”
Daniel took a long breath.
“Your mother contacted me last week. She told me there was something important about your past that you needed to know before the wedding. She asked me to bring you to a meeting because she was afraid you would refuse if she told you what it was about.”
“So she paid you to deceive me?”
“Yes.”
“And you agreed?”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
I felt as though the car had become unbearably small.
“Did you really think forcing me into a car was going to make me trust you?”
“No.”
“Then what were you thinking?”
“I thought that once you heard the truth, you would understand why she was desperate.”
“That’s what people say when they want to excuse something unforgivable.”
