He flinched.
I turned toward the window, fighting the urge to scream.
I still loved Daniel. That was the worst part.
Even while I was frightened and furious, some part of me wanted him to explain himself in a way that would make everything normal again.
But the man sitting beside me had made a decision about my freedom without asking me.
I couldn’t pretend that didn’t matter.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“To the old St. Catherine’s Hospital.”
“Why there?”
“An elderly doctor named Robert is waiting for us. He worked there when you were born.”
I turned toward him.
“When I was born?”
He nodded.
“He has your original medical records. He knows what happened.”
I looked out at the road ahead.
“Drive.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Emily—”
“Drive to the hospital. I’m going to hear the truth. But don’t mistake that for forgiveness.”
For the first time that morning, he obeyed without arguing.
