The day before I had to tell my children that their father was never coming home, I saw him standing in my doorway.

A name gets repeated.

People form an opinion.

And years later, someone searches that person’s name and sees the worst moment without seeing what happened afterward.

For Andy, that had consequences.

I watched opportunities disappear.

I watched people treat him differently.

I watched something that happened years earlier continue to follow him.

There was also another incident from his younger years involving his mother.

Alcohol was involved.

An argument happened.

Someone was injured.

Andy faced consequences.

Again, I am not saying that none of it mattered.

It did.

Andy had a serious problem with alcohol.

He had DUIs.

He made reckless choices.

His drinking affected his marriage.

It affected his relationships.

It was one of the reasons our marriage eventually ended.

I won’t rewrite that part of his story just because I loved him.

But I also learned something important over the years.

A person can have serious problems without being nothing but their problems.

Andy could make terrible decisions and still love his children deeply.

He could fail people and still have moments of kindness.

He could struggle with alcohol and still be a father who showed up for his kids.

People are complicated.

That doesn’t excuse what they do.
