Elena’s knees trembled.
Matthew stood beside her.
“You don’t have to see her.”
“If I hide every time she comes looking for me, she’ll never stop.”
“That doesn’t mean you have to confront her alone.”
Elena took a deep breath.
“I want to speak to her. With your lawyer present.”
Matthew nodded.
“Your decision.”
Ten minutes later, Elena entered a private conference room.
Isabel rose dramatically.
“Oh, darling!”
She rushed forward with outstretched arms.
Elena stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.”
Isabel froze.
The police officer looked from one woman to the other.
“Ms. Vargas, are you willing to speak with us about what happened last night?”
“Of course,” Elena answered.
Isabel’s face hardened.
“She’s confused. She was drinking, and she became hysterical. Mr. Ambrose was kind enough to offer her a business opportunity, but she misunderstood the situation.”
“That isn’t true,” Elena said.
“Don’t embarrass yourself.”
“You locked me in that bedroom.”
