“Do you understand how sad that is? I was ready to change something about my body that I had never even thought was a problem because I was afraid you wouldn’t want me anymore.”
Tyler’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know it was that bad.”
Emma shook her head.
“That’s the problem. You didn’t even try to understand.”
He wiped his face with his sleeve.
“You’re right.”
She took a slow breath.
“I feel bad about what those boys have done to you. Nobody deserves to be treated like that because of their skin. I don’t think you’re disgusting, Tyler. I never did.”
He looked up at her.
“But you made me feel the same way those boys made you feel,” she continued. “And I don’t want to be with somebody who is embarrassed by me.”
Tyler went completely still.
“Are you breaking up with me?”
Emma’s lower lip trembled.
