Instead, I said, “Felix loved this school. Even when he couldn’t attend, he asked about his teachers and classmates every day.”
William nodded.
“I wish I had listened when Emma first contacted me.”
“So do I.”
He turned toward my daughter.
“I’d like to speak with you about a way to remember Felix at the school, if you’re willing.”
Emma studied him carefully.
“Why now?”
He didn’t look away.
“Because I should have listened to you before. And because today made me realize that I have something to learn from the students I’m supposed to be guiding.”
Emma was silent for a moment.
Then she said, “I don’t want you to do it just because everyone heard what happened.”
“I understand.”
“I don’t want Felix to become a photograph that people pass every day without thinking about him.”
“What would you like instead?”
She glanced toward the gym, where students were still laughing and sharing memories.
