“Derek, the money was never what hurt most.”
He looked at me.
“What was?”
“The way you smiled when you thought you had taken something away from me.”
His expression softened.
“I know.”
I squeezed his hand.
“I hope you never look at our marriage that way again.”
He nodded.
“Neither do I.”
Today, our marriage is still a work in progress.
We didn’t repair seven years of unhealthy habits overnight.
There were difficult conversations.
Counseling appointments.
Financial planning sessions.
And moments when walking away would have been easier.
But there was also genuine change.
Derek learned to take responsibility for his share of our life.
Patricia learned that her son’s love didn’t give her unlimited access to his salary.
And I learned that generosity without boundaries can become a way of avoiding problems that desperately need to be addressed.
I no longer pay for everything simply to keep peace.
