I opened the transaction records.
“Here are the statements.”
He began scrolling.
A restaurant bill from March.
A holiday shopping charge.
Golf fees.
Fuel.
Travel.
Patricia’s purchases.
He looked up.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I almost laughed.
“I did.”
He frowned.
“When?”
“Every January when we reviewed our budget. Every time I asked you to attend a financial planning meeting. Every time I suggested you look at the statements.”
He looked away.
“You always made such a big deal out of numbers.”
I folded my arms.
“And you always refused to look at them.”
Patricia stood.
“Well, surely Lauren can keep paying the house expenses. She’s been doing it for years.”
I looked at her.
“That is exactly the problem.”
The house had been purchased four years earlier.
Derek enjoyed telling people he’d provided it for us.
He referred to it as his achievement.
His castle.
His reward for working hard.
