“Every little expense?”
“You know what I mean.”
I walked toward my office.
“Come upstairs.”
He followed, muttering under his breath.
Patricia hurried behind him.
Inside, I opened a spreadsheet.
Seven years of household finances were organized by category.
Mortgage.
Property taxes.
Insurance.
Utilities.
Food.
Transportation.
Repairs.
Subscriptions.
Savings.
I turned the screen toward them.
“Look.”
Derek leaned forward.
His eyes moved across the figures.
“What am I supposed to be seeing?”
“The actual cost of our lifestyle.”
Patricia frowned.
“Surely Derek contributes.”
I clicked another tab.
“He has contributed. But far less than either of you appears to understand.”
I showed them the current year’s totals.
The mortgage and property expenses consumed a substantial amount.
Insurance and maintenance added more.
Utilities, food, transportation, and discretionary spending brought the annual household budget to a figure that made Patricia sit down.
Derek stared.
“That can’t be right.”
“It is.”
“There’s no way we spend that much.”
