Sofia tried to reach for her hand.
Emily stepped away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Patricia finally spoke.
“How could you do this to another family, Sofia?”
Sofia sobbed.
“I fell in love with him.”
Her mother stared at her.
“Then you should have had the courage to tell the truth and accept the consequences. Instead, you helped him deceive people who trusted you.”
Daniel shook his head impatiently.
“This has gone far enough.”
“No,” I said. “It has gone exactly as far as it needed to go.”
I turned toward the guests.
“I didn’t organize tonight to invite people to hate Daniel. I don’t need anyone to punish him for me. I organized this celebration because I refused to let the truth remain hidden while everyone congratulated us on a marriage he was secretly betraying.”
I paused and looked at the wedding photograph still visible at the edge of the screen.
