“What?”
“How long have you been seeing Sofia?”
He glanced at her.
“Margaret, please.”
“Three months? Six? A year? How long have you been lying to me?”
He lowered his eyes.
That silence was an answer in itself.
Emily suddenly stood.
“Tell her!”
Her voice broke on the final word.
Daniel turned toward our daughter.
“Emily, this is between your mother and me.”
“No, Dad! You brought my friend into our family. You lied to Mom. You lied to all of us. And now you’re telling us this is private?”
She wiped her face.
“Was I supposed to invite Sofia to our house forever without knowing that she was sleeping with my father?”
A terrible silence followed.
Sofia began to cry.
“Emily, I never wanted to hurt you.”
Emily looked at her in disbelief.
“You never wanted to hurt me? You sat at our table. You called my mother your second mother. You watched us celebrate their anniversary, knowing what you were doing.”
