I heard a glass being placed hurriedly on a table.
Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.
“Turn that off!”
Nobody moved.
Another message appeared.
“Tomorrow, same place. Don’t be late.”
Then came photographs of Daniel and Sofia meeting privately at a restaurant and leaving a hotel together on separate occasions.
The images were presented without intimate details, but the dates and messages made the nature of their relationship painfully clear.
A murmur spread through the room.
Sofia sat frozen in her chair.
Emily stared at the screen, then at her father, then at her friend.
Her face drained of color.
“Mom?” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
Daniel marched toward the screen.
“Who gave you these? This is private! You have no right to do this!”
I placed the microphone back near my mouth.
“You’re right about one thing, Daniel. These messages are private. They were never meant to be shared with the people you deceived.”
