Another pause.
“But she misunderstood something.”
Monica looked across the audience.
“Sometimes people who appear to be bowing are not surrendering.”
She leaned slightly toward the microphone.
“They are gathering what they need to stand again.”
The room remained silent.
Then Monica finished.
“Katherine thought I was invisible.”
“She thought Ruth was disposable.”
“She thought Diane was too frightened to matter.”
“She thought Grace Williams could disappear because nobody important would ask where she went.”
Monica shook her head.
“She was wrong about all of us.”
The audience stood.
Applause filled the hall.
Monica stepped away from the podium.
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Ruth.
A photograph of a purple silk dress she had just finished tailoring.
Below it:
Made this one myself.
Monica smiled.
Then replied:
Beautiful. Save one for me.
She slipped the phone into her bag and walked toward the exit.
Years earlier, Katherine Prescott had thrown a dirty kitchen rag at Monica and told her to wear it to a gala so everyone could see what charity looked like.
