P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

“What?”

“A ledger.”

I stared.

Michael explained that before I met him, before he changed his surname to Bennett, he had been Michael Holloway.

In 1980, he worked nights at a warehouse while finishing school.

One evening he arrived early and witnessed three men dragging an employee into an office.

An argument.

Then g/u/nshots.

Michael hid.

He saw too much.

The men discovered him.

He escaped.

One witness disappeared.

A prosecutor connected to the case later turned up d/e/@/d.

Michael panicked.

Rebecca, who worked for an attorney connected to the investigation, helped him vanish.

New surname.

New documents.

New life.

“What does Thomas have to do with any of it?”

Michael stared at the station floor.

“He was there.”

My stomach tightened.

“Your brother?”

“He was nineteen.”

“Was he one of the men?”

“No.”

Michael hesitated.

“He helped them afterward.”

“Helped them how?”

“Documents. Records. Vehicles. He was terrified.”
