P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

His eyes filled.

“I watched.”

I stared.

“What?”

“From a distance.”

My grief became fury.

“You watched me?”

“I needed to know you were safe.”

“That is supposed to comfort me?”

“No.”

“It makes it worse.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that!”

People glanced toward us.

I didn’t care.

I looked at the face I had kissed thousands of times.

Part of me wanted to throw my arms around him.

Part of me wanted to walk away forever.

Instead I asked the only question that mattered.

“Where is Emily?”

Michael’s expression changed.

“She isn’t with me.”

“Then who has her?”

“Thomas.”

“Your brother?”

He nodded.

“My husband didn’t have a brother.”

“I had two.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Of course you did.”

“Maggie—”

“No. Not yet. Where is our daughter?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“Thomas owns a warehouse in Cicero. Emily went there yesterday.”

“Why?”

“Because she found something.”
