P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

“Why did you?”

“I didn’t know it was you at first.”

I laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“You had my photograph.”

“Not that evening.”

He explained that he had expected to meet me the following week with Emily.

But the previous night he had gone to the bar after arguing with Rebecca.

He had seen me sitting alone.

He thought I looked familiar.

When I told him my first name, something clicked.

Then I mentioned my late husband.

Michael.

Daniel realized who I was.

“You knew before you came back to the hotel.”

“Yes.”

The answer sliced through me.

“And you said nothing.”

“I should have.”

“You slept with me.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“Did you do that because of him?”

“No.”

“Because you wanted revenge?”

“No.”

“Because you wanted to humiliate me?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Then why?”

He looked directly at me.

“Because by the time I realized who you were, I already liked you.”
