P2 I slept with a stranger on my sixty-second birthday, and by sunrise he was gone

My eyes narrowed.

“Where are the others?”

“One disappeared after Michael died.”

“And the third?”

Rebecca met my eyes.

“Someone mailed it to Daniel last month.”

Daniel removed a folded piece of paper.

“With this.”

He handed it to me.

The paper was a photocopy of a legal document.

At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.

Then I saw Michael’s name.

Michael James Holloway.

My husband had been Michael James Bennett.

“What is this?”

Rebecca whispered, “Your husband changed his name before he met you.”

I stared at her.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Margaret—”

“I saw his birth certificate.”

“A replacement.”

“My husband worked for the city. He had background checks.”

“Under the identity he used afterward.”

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

I suddenly felt faint.

“What was he running from?”

Neither answered.

“What was he running from?”

Rebecca glanced toward the hallway.

Then she lowered her voice.
