I frowned.
Then Michael laughed faintly.
“She thinks it was forgetting our twentieth anniversary.”
Despite everything, tears rushed into my eyes.
He had forgotten.
I had been furious for three days.
Then his voice changed.
“But there are mistakes we make because we’re selfish, and there are mistakes we make because we’re afraid.”
Static crackled.
“Mine was fear.”
Rebecca lowered her head.
“I should have told Margaret years ago.”
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Told me what?” I whispered.
Michael continued.
“Rebecca was never my mistress.”
I looked at her.
“She was the person who helped me disappear.”
The recording clicked off.
Silence.
I stared at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
He looked almost as shaken as I felt.
“There’s more.”
“Then play it.”
“We can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because that’s all that’s on this recorder.”
I laughed without humor.
“How convenient.”
Rebecca reached into her handbag.
“There were three recordings.”
