I respected that.
I found Elena’s email address and sent her a short message. I told her Chloe was getting married, included the date, and made it clear that the decision was Chloe’s.
I did not beg.
I did not accuse.
I simply passed along the invitation.
For two weeks, there was no reply.
Then Elena messaged me.
I’ll be at our daughter Chloe’s wedding. How would I look in front of my new family if I skipped an event like that, right? I expect no drama from you.
She was coming.
And she was bringing the man she had chosen over us.
When I showed Chloe the message, she surprised me.
“Tell her she’s welcome.”
I stared at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t owe her anything.”
“I know.”
“She hasn’t earned the right to walk back into your life as if nothing happened.”
Chloe closed her laptop.
