When he asked for my blessing, I told him that he already had it.
Then I warned him that he would need to learn six different ways of surviving family dinners.
He laughed.
Chloe cried.
I pretended I had something in my eye.
The wedding became the biggest event our family had ever organized. The girls wanted flowers, music, photographs, and a reception that would bring together everyone who had helped us through the years.
I paid what I could and refused to let Chloe worry about the rest.
One evening, while we were reviewing the seating chart, she looked up from her laptop.
“Dad, do you think Mom knows I’m getting married?”
“I don’t know.”
“Would you tell her if she didn’t?”
I hesitated.
“Would you like me to?”
Chloe stared at the screen for a long time.
Then she nodded.
“I don’t want to spend my wedding wondering whether I should have invited her.”
