“Emily, I need you to come to my office immediately.”
When I arrived, she had a laptop open on her desk.
On the screen was a scanned document.
It was an email from Harrison to a financial adviser, dated six months before Richard’s death.
The subject line read:
THE BOY WILL SIGN WHEN THE TIME COMES.
I felt sick.
Margaret enlarged the document.
The email described a plan to transfer ownership of several family assets into a new holding company. The proposed transfer depended on obtaining Tyler’s signature once he was old enough to participate in the relevant legal arrangements.
But the assets weren’t Harrison’s alone to control.
Some belonged to trusts created by Richard.
Others were subject to restrictions Harrison had repeatedly tried to circumvent.
At the bottom of the email was a sentence that made my blood run cold.
If Emily becomes a problem, the custody arrangement will solve that.
