According to Daniel, Laura walked out of the living room at that exact moment and turned pale.
The lawyer stepped inside and placed an envelope on the table.
“Your father instructed me to open this only under one specific condition.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What condition?”
The lawyer looked directly at him.
“If he was ever forced to leave his home.”
The room went silent.
Daniel sat down.
Laura didn’t say a word.
Robert continued.
“Fifteen years ago, your mother and father changed the legal terms surrounding this property. The house could only ever be transferred to you on the condition that your father retained the full right to live there for the rest of his life.”
Daniel put a hand to his forehead.
“But what does that have to do with the pillow?”
The lawyer had apparently been waiting for that question.
“Your mother did not trust banks with certain personal documents. She kept one original copy of the agreement inside the house.”
Laura whispered,
“Where?”
The lawyer looked at her.
“There was a small cloth pocket sewn inside your father’s old pillow.”
I knew about that pocket.
Margaret had sewn it herself.
And there wasn’t just one document inside.
