“Leave it. It’s an old, yellowed pillow anyway. We’re going to throw it out.”
For the first time, I felt truly afraid.
But I didn’t show it.
At Claire’s house, they gave me a small bedroom.
I barely slept the first night.
The next day, I called Daniel three times.
He didn’t answer.
On the third call, Laura picked up.
“If you’re calling about the pillow, I already told you—we threw it away.”
I closed my eyes.
“Did you open it?”
Silence.
A few seconds passed.
Then Laura asked,
“Open what?”
“Nothing.”
I hung up.
Claire was watching me from across the room.
“George, what’s inside that pillow?”
I didn’t answer.
I only said,
“If they haven’t thrown it away yet, they’ll understand soon enough.” What happened next read in the comments 👇‼️👇‼️
Two days later, at around ten in the morning, a black car pulled up in front of Daniel’s house.
My neighbor told me about it afterward.
A man in a gray suit stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.
He knocked on the door.
Daniel answered.
“Mr. Daniel Miller?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Robert Hayes. I’m your father’s attorney.”
