My sister kissed my husband in front of thirty people at her own anniversary party and called it a joke. kertati Her husband had a wrapped present in his hands and an envelope she had never opened.

She wrote twice.

The first letter was four pages long.

I didn’t finish it.

The second was only three sentences.

I’ve kept that one.

Not because I forgive her.

I’m not sure I do.

I’ve kept it because sometimes you need proof that something really happened.

Callan sees the children half the week.

He has never once been late.

I will say that for him.

And then nothing else.

The serving dish from that afternoon is still in my kitchen.

I don’t know why I kept it.

It’s an ordinary white dish.

There is nothing special about it.

But sometimes I look at it and remember Sasha taking it from my hands.

“Give me that before you drop it.”

She said it eleven seconds after I watched her kiss my husband.

“It was a joke.”

Thirty people stood there.

Nobody said anything.

And that is the part I think about now.

Not the kiss.

Not the photographs.

Not even the secret phone.

The silence.

Because my sister didn’t suddenly become someone who could betray me.

She had been practicing in front of all of us for years.

Every joke.

Every inappropriate touch.

Every comment about my husband.

Every time somebody laughed instead of telling her to stop.
