My mother-in-law tore my dress in half in my own kitchen in front of twenty people and shouted that her son had paid for everything in it. Then I put my phone down on the counter and let it run.

I made Marco a director in 2021.

He asked. He had been at the company four years by then in a role that did not really need to exist, and he said, at our own kitchen table, that his family asked him what he actually did and he never knew what to say.

So I made him a director and gave him a signing limit.

And I did not put him through vendor approval.

Every supplier at Ruta Alba goes through a three-stage check with a declaration of interest at the top of it. Every single one, since 2016, because I wrote that process myself.

Except the ones Marco brought in, because he was my husband, and because asking my husband to fill in a conflict declaration felt like an insult I did not want to deliver in my own house.

I built a company on a process and then cut one hole in it for the one person who was going to use it.
