“That’s not fair.”
“Your mother hit Fiona in front of you.”
“I didn’t know she would do that!”
“But you knew she was going to provoke me.”
He said nothing.
“Luca.”
“Yes.”
My heart broke again.
Smaller this time.
Cleaner.
“You wanted me to explode.”
“I wanted leverage.”
The honesty was almost worse.
“For what?”
“To stop you from leaving.”
I stared through Rachel’s window at children playing across the street.
“You were afraid I would leave, so you created evidence to take my child.”
“I wasn’t going to take her.”
“You had a custody petition.”
“It was supposed to scare you.”
Something cold moved through me.
That was Luca.
Not a monster in the dramatic sense.
No secret basement.
No double life.
Something more ordinary.
A man who believed love gave him the right to frighten you into staying.
“I need you to leave,” I said.
“Jessi.”
“Goodbye.”
“Wait.”
I almost hung up.
Then he said, “There’s something in the house you should see.”
I froze.
“What?”
“In my study. Bottom drawer. Blue folder.”
My pulse quickened.
“What is it?”
“You’ll understand.”
“Bring it to your lawyer.”
“No.”
His voice sounded strange.
“Because if my mother knows it exists, she’ll destroy it.”
