Susan asked me what I wanted.
The question seemed simple, yet I struggled to answer it.
For months, I had been asking myself what Tyler wanted, what Rachel wanted, and what would keep the family together.
I had spent so much time considering everyone else’s expectations that I had almost forgotten I was allowed to have my own.
“I want to protect my home,” I said finally. “I want to understand our finances. And I want to know that whatever happens next, I won’t be pressured into giving up things that belong to me.”
Susan nodded.
“Those are reasonable objectives. We’ll take them one step at a time.”
Before I left, she explained that the next steps would depend on the documents and the circumstances. We would need to assess the financial position, determine how the property should be treated, and discuss the divorce process if that was the direction I chose.
