“You knew about the inheritance. You knew the house was paid for. You knew the kids were away at college.”
“Because you told me!”
“At the holiday party?”
Rachel’s eyes widened.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
I sat back and watched the conversation shift away from me.
Tyler opened the folder Margaret had brought.
He looked through the pages, then turned toward Rachel.
“Margaret mentioned your previous employers. Is there something I should know?”
Rachel stood.
“I am not going to sit here while your wife and her sister try to destroy my reputation.”
“No one is trying to destroy anything,” Margaret replied. “We’re trying to understand why you came here expecting to receive property that does not belong to you.”
Rachel ignored her.
She looked directly at Tyler.
“You told me your marriage was finished. You told me you wanted a fresh start. You told me we would have a family together.”
