Rachel folded her arms.
“Tyler told me about his marriage.”
“What exactly did he tell you?”
“That you had grown apart. That you spent most of your time doing your own things. That you weren’t happy together anymore.”
I nodded slowly.
“Did he tell you that I had asked him to attend counseling?”
Tyler’s head snapped up.
Rachel looked at him.
“No.”
“Did he tell you that I suggested we take a trip together for our eighteenth anniversary?”
She said nothing.
“Did he tell you that I spent months trying to understand why he no longer wanted to spend time with me?”
Rachel’s confidence began to slip.
“Debra, I don’t know anything about your private conversations.”
“Exactly.”
I paused.
“You know the version of our marriage that Tyler gave you. You know the parts that made it easier for you to believe that what you were doing was acceptable.”
Tyler stood abruptly.
