I read it twice.
Then I handed the phone back.
“Did he tell you I had agreed to sign anything?”
“He said you would do it once the divorce began.”
“I haven’t agreed to a divorce settlement, let alone a loan.”
Susan looked sick.
“I thought he was handling everything.”
“That is exactly what he wanted you to think.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, “I brought him into my daughter’s life.”
I wanted to tell her that her choices had consequences. I wanted to remind her of the cruel message she had sent me. I wanted her to understand that I was still hurting.
But she already knew.
The woman who had once spoken so proudly about winning my husband was now beginning to understand that she might never have known him at all.
Still, I refused to confuse pity with trust.
I kept copies of every document.
