Robert had told Lisa that the property development was backed by several wealthy investors. But two of the companies named in his presentation had no documented involvement in the project.
He had told Susan that his business contacts would guarantee the investment.
But there was no written guarantee.
He had told me that he was helping an old friend with financial planning.
Yet his emails showed that he had been arranging meetings with Lisa and the developers while telling me he was out of town.
His lies had not been separate.
They had been woven together.
Every time he gave one person an explanation, he had created another problem somewhere else.
The most painful discovery came when Susan showed me a message Robert had sent her the week before he moved out.
“Once Margaret signs the paperwork, the house will be taken care of. Then we can stop worrying about money and finally live the way we deserve.”
