The glass reflected the room behind the camera.
At first it was only darkness layered faintly over Derek’s body.
Then Rachel saw a pale oval near the right edge.
A face.
She froze.
“Mara.”
Mara leaned closer.
Rachel enlarged the reflection.
The image degraded, but not enough to erase it.
A girl stood behind the glass holding a phone low against her chest.
Her hair was pulled into the tight ballet bun Rachel had helped pin hundreds of times.
Her eyes were wide.
Her mouth was slightly open.
Even distorted by reflection and shadow, there was no mistaking Audrey’s face.
Rachel stared at her daughter’s terrified reflection in the glass while, on the other side, Derek calmly counted bundles of cash beside Scott’s company deposit bags.
