Mara whispered something Rachel didn’t understand.
Rachel could not stop looking at Derek’s hands.
He was counting the bundles.
One stack sat apart from the others. His thumb was pressed to the edge as though separating bills. His expression held no panic, no surprise. He looked focused.
Comfortable.
Like he had done it before.
Rachel’s hand moved toward the screen.
“Where was this taken?”
“I don’t know.”
Mara pointed to a corner. “That sign.”
Behind Derek, partly blocked by a shelf, was a strip of lettering. Rachel could only see STORAGE and three numbers.
Her stomach turned.
The photo was slightly crooked, as if whoever took it had been trying not to be seen.
Audrey.
Of course Audrey.
Rachel’s eyes moved across every inch of the image, searching for something that would tell her where her daughter had been standing and whether Derek had known.
