My husband rang to say he was in emergency surgery all night. I was looking down through the glass walkway at him at the time, with his arm round another woman and his entire family beside him holding boarding passes. I didn’t go down. I went to a quiet corner and made one phone call.

The room went quiet.

Thirty people. Two of Whit’s partners. His head of department.

Nobody said one word.

And Whit, four seats away, laughed. Not cruelly. The way you laugh when your mother has said something a bit much and you would rather not deal with it.

And I sat down.

You just paid for the room.

She meant it as a small unkindness about money. She did not know she was being literal.

I had paid for the room. I had also paid for the building his practice sits in, for eight years, and she has been to Christmas at my house since 2015 and has never once asked whose house it is.

PART 3 — TWO YEARS

I was told.

I want that written down before anything else, because there is a version of this where I am a woman ambushed at an airport and that version is not true.

At a wedding in the May of 2023 — five months before that dinner — Bexley’s ex-husband Corwin got hold of me by the bar and said something I did not want to hear.

He had had two drinks. He was bitter about the divorce. He said Whit had been seeing somebody at the hospital for about a year and that the family knew and that his own ex-wife had covered for it twice.
