My husband rang to say he was in emergency surgery all night. I was looking down through the glass walkway at him at the time, with his arm round another woman and his entire family beside him holding boarding passes. I didn’t go down. I went to a quiet corner and made one phone call.

And then I stepped back. Not out — back. I have not sat in that office full time since 2016.

The building Whit’s surgical group leases is one of ours. It has been since 2009, four years before I met him.

The house on Linnet Hill is held by the trust.

His car is on a lease through a company whose sole member is a holding entity that Emeric administers.

None of that was hidden from him. It was all in the pre-nuptial disclosure and he read it with his own lawyer in 2015.

He simply stopped thinking about it, the way you stop thinking about the foundations of a house you live in, and about four years in he began telling people a different version, and I let him.

In the October of 2023 there was a dinner when he made senior partner. About thirty people at a hotel on the river.

I had been asked to say something. I had a card in my hand with four lines on it.

And Rosa came round that table and took it out of my fingers, and passed it sideways to Bexley without looking at her.

And she said, to thirty people:

“Give me that. Bexley’ll do it, she’s family. You just paid for the room, sweetheart. Sit down.”
